August is upon us and with it the silly season for political news. Why should we buck the trend? I was invited to a barbecue recently by a friend who is involved in local politics and here is the news value, they are not Liberal Democrats, poor souls.
So I dutifully turned up with my hat pulled down over my face to fool the journalists and, to my horror, there were none. However, the family dog took a great interest in me. Ah well, the penalty of fame!
But the evening got better and a splendid spread was prepared, but the family of three adults had each assumed the other was shopping for drink, both alcoholic and the other sort. As a result your correspondent (me) was dispatched to the local winery with complex instructions to save the day. You can imagine my joy in pointing out to my friends that such a disaster could not possibly happen in a Lib Dem household.
Still on a lighter note, I see that the king in waiting, that nice chap Mr Tony Blair, spent my money on a plane from the Queen's flight that even Her Majesty is not using because of its high cost. This to take his family on their Italian holiday.
What with this and poor old John Prescott getting a bad press for two Jags and spending big bucks on carpeting his London residence, both seem to have learnt little from the bad coverage Lord Chancellor Derry Irvine got for spending large amounts on special wallpaper. It was suggested at the time that B&Q could have made him a special offer!
Well chaps, all this is in fun, but I wonder if perhaps a dose of reality in some quarters may not be in order. What do you think?
