Liberal Democrat candidate Gareth Hartwell was the only major candidate whose vote went up in the General Election, with a swing of 5% from Labour's Ann Keen and 4% from the Conservatives - well above the national average.
Gareth commented,
"I am delighted by this result which shows that we are making real progress locally and have a good chance of gaining councillors next year. It's also great that all 5 of our South-West London MPs got re-elected, many with much bigger majorities.
"I believe that the reason for our success was because we are campaigning hard on the issues which matter to people. We have been leading the local campaigns on a fair deal for pensioners, to save the tube from Labour breakup and privatisation, for more money on schools and hospitals rather than tax cuts and for free long term care for the elderly.
"Both the election result and the number of responses we have to our petitions show how important these issues are and I am determined that we must continue to put pressure on Ann Keen and the Labour Government to deliver on them."
Gareth had a busy last week, campaigning at 5 local tube stations, a street stall in Chiswick, Hounslow Heathlands school and as many doors as he could. Meanwhile, party workers delivered over 20,000 leaflets.
