The Liberal Democrats have re-selected 1997 candidate Gareth Hartwell as their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Brentford & Isleworth.
Gareth lives in the constituency on Isleworth's Syon Estate, and works as a senior consultant for a major British IT company, managing communications projects for major clients. He is currently also working on a voluntary project for homelessness charity Shelter.
As the Lib Dem candidate in 1997 Gareth led the campaign for improvements to rail, tube and bus services. He has also worked closely with Twickenham Lib Dem MP Vince Cable to ensure patients' needs were not forgotten in the plans to redevelop the West Middlesex Hospital.
He took an active part in the Waste Minimisation group of Local Agenda 21 in the run-up to the launch of Hounslow's doorstep recycling scheme.
As a former teacher and Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme leader, Gareth believes that much youth crime is caused by a lack of involvement by young people in activities such as sport or clubs.
When his estate was hit by serious vandalism he organised meetings between community police and residents to encourage them to work together in ending the problem.
Following his re-selection, he said:
"This election must be about the issues - schools, hospitals, police, public transport and opportunities for the young.
"The other parties pay lip service to these issues but Labour has failed to properly address them in four years while the Tories are pledged to cuts, not rebuilding services.
"My role is to build on recent Liberal Democrat successes and provide the alternative to Labour here after the annihilation of the Tories at the last election.
"The Conservatives cannot win here again, but many people are disillusioned with Labour and feel that Ann Keen has failed to deliver on her election promises."
