Respected Bedfont independent Julius Lobo has joined the Liberal Democrats.
Julius stood in the 1998 Hounslow Borough Council elections for a residents' group, scoring 411 votes - just two votes behind the last Conservative.
He remained an independent last year when he lent his support to Liberal Democrat John Howliston during his winning campaign in the Bedfont by-election.
But now he has decided to join the Liberal Democrats and become one of their team working to improve Bedfont.
He said:
"When I stood for the council in 1998 it was because I wanted to make things happen in Bedfont.
"I have watched John Howliston closely since he was elected last year, and seen how hard he and Peter Hills work for our community.
"I have become convinced that there is no future as an independent in this area, and that the Lib Dems offer the best chance of making a difference. That's why I have joined the Liberal Democrats."
