FAILURE TO CONSIDER PR CONDEMNED BY LIB DEM GENERAL ELECTION CANDIDATE
The government's failure to tackle voting reform in the Queen's Speech has been attacked by the Liberal Democrats' general election candidate for Feltham and Heston, Andy Darley.
Andy said:
"This is a disappointing Queen's Speech from a disappointing government. People in Feltham and Heston sent a clear message at the election that they wanted Labour to do more and to do it better than last time.
"Yet after every piece of legislation in this Queen's Speech is enacted students will still be forced to pay tuition fees and older people will still have to sell their homes to pay for long-term care."
Andy Darley said he was particularly disappointed that the government was making no proposals about voting reform, despite the serious drop in turnout at the general election.
He said:
"I used my speech at the election count to call for PR as I believe it would help involve people in the political process more.
"June 7th proved that people are more likely to go to the polls if their vote will have an effect: with PR all votes will count equally. The government has missed a major opportunity by not announcing a referendum."
