Dear Sir/ Madam
Next weekend many West Londoners will be joining a march organised by Slough Anti Incinerator Network & West London Stop the Incinerator Campaign against the proposed build of Grundon's new incinerator at Colnbrook. Like many Liberal Democrats, deeply opposed to unsustainable forms of waste management, I will be joining the protesters. What we need urgently is government commitment to a rapid increase in our recycling levels, not the messy fix that an incinerator provides.
Incinerators are linked to increased incidence of heart disease. They discharge large amounts of pollutants that have been linked to cancer -- they are a major source of the particulates and particulates that cause lung cancer. Particulate pollution has been shown to increase the incidence of asthma in children, reduce immunity being associated with higher rates of ear, nose and throat infection.
The protest groups are calling for a moratorium on any build of the incinerator and a public inquiry into the original planning application. An initial success for the campaign has been West Waste delaying their decision on whether to sign a contract for waste disposal with Grundons and look for alternatives. This contract is critical for Grundons to proceed with building the new incinerator and would be in place for as long as 20-25 years.
The Rally against the incinerator (4th Dec) is from 2.30 pm Colnbrook Village and protesters will assemble at Hounslow West Tube station at 1pm. For more information on the march visit www.sainslough.org.uk
Yours sincerely
Andrew Dakers
