Satnam Kaur Khalsa and Cllr John Howliston help raise awareness at Fairtrade street stall in Hounslow
Satnam Kaur Khalsa (Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson for Feltham & Heston), a long standing advocate of Fairtrade in Hounslow, is calling for Hounslow Council to pass a motion with urgency in the New Year setting in motion activity for Hounslow to become a Fairtrade Borough.
Satnam Kaur Khalsa, said:
"Cllr John Howliston and I joined other Fairtrade campaigners that met in the Hounslow High Street in front of Trinity Church on Saturday 10th December to help raise awareness of the wide range of Fair Trade products now available.
"I was delighted to see many residents come over to sample the goods. I hope that Hounslow will become a Fairtrade Borough in the New Year. What a wonderful resolution and message of good will that would be.
"There have been several delays already. I understand that the Executive will now consider the resolution supporting Fairtrade on the 3rd January and the public Borough Council meeting will then take place on the 24th January".
"The council must attract popular support for the campaign. A local Fairtrade steering group must now be convened to ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade Borough status."
There are five goals to achieve Fairtrade Borough status:
1. The Council must pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in offices and canteens.
2. A range of Fairtrade products must be readily available in the area's shops and served in local cafés and catering establishments (targets are set in relation to population).
3. Fairtrade products must be used by a number of local workplaces (estate agents, hairdressers etc) and community organisations (churches, schools etc).
4. The council must attract popular support for the campaign.
5. A local Fairtrade steering group must be convened to ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade Borough status.
There has been a good support from the residents of Hounslow so far. However, it is important that this support is structured and evident to the Fairtrade Foundation.
