Cllr John Howliston
The fire that devastated part of this school on the morning of Saturday 11th February is reported to have been started deliberately.
My personal feelings embraced both disbelief that anyone could have done this and anger at the pointless destruction of a most valuable resource for our community.
My two sons both received their early years education at this school in the 1970s and I am sad that this school that has served our Bedfont community for so long should suffer in this way.
It is cold comfort to learn, that in the country every day, some three schools are subject to arson attacks. This of course results in greatly increased costs for the local community in terms of repair costs and increased insurance premiums.
It is so awful that youngsters, who are so alienated from the society in which they live, are indulging in such mindless acts of vandalism. There must be an answer to this alienation and disaffection that pervades our society. It will not be easy but it seems to me that we must find some way to bring these youngsters back into society's fold.
