Cllr Andrew Dakers, Parliamentary Spokesperson for Brentford & Isleworth, visiting Age Concern Hounslow
A new report from Age Concern and Help the Aged has prompted local MP Susan Kramer to criticise the practice of age discrimination within the insurance industry. She is backing work by the Association of British Insurers to seek guarantees that no-one over 65 is ever again refused insurance without being offered advice on where to get cover.
Susan Kramer said:
"Age discrimination is wrong and it flies in the face of the facts of longer life expectations.
"Nearly a third of people over 75 took at least three holidays in 2006 involving travel abroad and the number of drives over 70 is going to more than double to 10 million by 2050.
"Older people are also less likely to shop around if they are refused insurance by a company.
"Many in this generation do not have Internet access and even when they do shop around the cost of cover can be hugely expensive."
