Nick Clegg MP and Cllr Andrew Dakers, Liberal Democrat Prospective MP for Brentford & Isleworth Constituency
As a key sponsor of the Tories' local campaign, Lord Ashcroft, finally revealed his non-dom status, Liberal Democrat Prospective MP Cllr Andrew Dakers (Brentford and Isleworth Constituency) has joined his party leader in calling for politics in Britain to be cleaned up.
Last week Nick Clegg MP, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, said:
"We will deliver the new politics - fair votes, a directly elected House of Lords, clean up the murky business of party funding."
Clegg went on to criticise Gordon Brown's Government for failing to check the "greed of the bankers" and added that the Conservatives had "elevated hypocrisy to an art form".
Taking up the theme Cllr Andrew Dakers, prospective MP for Brentford & Isleworth, expressed his concern about the latest revelations in the Ashcroft affair and the fact that this enables the Conservative candidate in Brentford & Isleworth Constituency to produce lavish pre-election material on the basis of Ashcroft's largely untaxed fortune.
Cllr Dakers said:
"The Tories say that Lord Ashcroft hasn't broken any laws. Isn't that like the expenses excuse 'we haven't broken any rules' that rightly so incensed the public? Lord Ashcroft would appear to have misled even his own party leaders, but they are still happy to take his money.
"As my colleague Lord Oakeshott has pointed out: 'Ashcroft has been sitting for the last 10 years in the British parliament, he has been voting on British laws and British public spending when he has not been paying full British tax like the other 60 million of us. That's a democratic disgrace.'"
