- "Fight to the finish," say Hounslow Lib Dems
In a campaign that has seen the Liberal Democrats overtake Labour in this constituency at the bookies - and receive endorsement from local resident, actor and campaigner Colin Firth - it is now clear that the local contest on Thursday 6th May will go right to the wire. Cllr Andrew Dakers, Liberal Democrat prospective MP for Brentford & Isleworth Constituency, the main challenger to both Labour and Conservatives, says every vote for the Liberal Democrats will count more than ever this time. Cllr Andrew Dakers, Liberal Democrat prospective MP, said: "Ann Keen has been losing support for over a decade. She is a deeply unpopular MP. With a swing of 9% again from Labour to the Lib Dems we can provide people with a new approach and more accessible representation in Parliament. "Over the past few weeks we have experienced a phenomenal ground swell of support with financial donations, new volunteers and poster sites flowing in thick and fast. This election is now going right to the wire. "Brentford and Isleworth needs real change. I have been rooted in the community my entire life, people know me as a hard-working local councillor and a committed environmentalist. "If elected as your new MP, I will work with Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats to ensure that change comes about. A fairer tax system. A fair chance for every child. A fair future: creating jobs by making Britain greener. A fairer voting system where you have the right to sack your MP. "It is time for a fundamental change in British politics. Labour promised electoral reform in 1997 but failed to deliver it. The Conservatives are opposed to it. Both Labour and Conservative supported the de-regulation of the financial sector that led to the economic crisis. Only the Lib Dems warned against it. "Don't let the old parties scare you with their negative attacks. Don't let the old parties tell you that things can't be different. They can be. "With your support on tomorrow Britain can have real change with the Liberal Democrats." NOTES TO EDITORS 1. Andrew Dakers' campaign can be followed at www.andrewdakers.com and he will be 'Tweeting' throughout Election Day. - Local resident Colin Firth backs Lib Dems for fundamental change in politics
Andrew Dakers, Lib Dem Prospective MP for Brentford & Isleworth Constituency, by the Hogarth Statue in Chiswick Oscar-nominated and Bafta Award winning actor, campaigner for refugee rights and local resident Colin Firth is backing the Liberal Democrats at this election having previously supported Labour. Colin Firth first gained wide public attention for his portrayal of Mr Darcy in the 1995 television adaption of Pride and Prejudice. He achieved film stardom with 'Bridget Jones's Diary' and in February 2010 received an Academy Award nomination for his work in 'A Single Man', for which he won the BAFTA for Best Actor. Lib Dem prospective MP Cllr Andrew Dakers welcomed the news. He is a signatory to the Liberty-Refugee Council parliamentary candidates' pledge on refugee rights. Colin Firth's support is one among many indicators of growing support for Andrew Dakers. In the past few weeks bookies odds on Cllr Dakers winning the parliamentary seat have started to swing strongly in the Liberal Democrat's favour. Actor, campaigner for refugee rights and local resident Colin Firth says of the Liberal Democrats: "Whenever I look for compassionate and intellectually rigorous politics I keep coming back to them." "As a party outside the establishment, they seem to be offering a change to the basic system of politics that would involve listening to and amplifying the voice of outsiders. Those who, like me, have despaired of political alternatives, should take a second look." Cllr Andrew Dakers, Lib Dem Prospective MP for Brentford & Isleworth, commented: "I am delighted that Colin Firth has backed the Liberal Democrats politics and principles, recognising that we are seeking to fundamentally transform how politics is done in the UK. He is a local resident, globally respected for his work as an actor, and also shining a spotlight on the issue of refugee rights." "Along with my Lib Dem colleagues I have signed the Liberty-Refugee Council parliamentary candidates' pledge. We recognise there is no place for racism and xenophobia in modern British politics. Nor is democratic debate advanced by the denigration of the most vulnerable in our country, which includes children and asylum seekers. "As prospective MP I am conscious of the need for refugee protection, even in lively and sometimes controversial debates about immigration policy. We have a proud tradition as a nation that offers succour to those in genuine fear of persecution. It is important that while preventing abuses of the system we do not lose sight of this." NOTES TO EDITORS 1. The other local actor backing the Liberal Democrats and Andrew's campaign is Susan Penhaligon. 2. In 2005 Andrew visited Feltham Young Offenders Institution to see first hand what was being done to improve the institution after years of lurching from one crisis to the next. Since then Andrew has handled a few asylum cases in his role as a councillor. After the General Election Andrew plans to visit a Detention Centre, to monitor the conditions in which refugees are being housed. 3. Chiswick-based Antique specialist and TV presenter Tom Keane is also supporting Andrew Dakers as Parliamentary candidate. - Andrew Dakers invites suggestions for first question to Prime Minister
Andrew Dakers, Lib Dem Prospective MP for the Brentford & Isleworth Constituency Councillor Andrew Dakers, the Lib Dem prospective MP for the Brentford and Isleworth constituency, is inviting members of the public to send in suggestions for his first question to the Prime Minister should he be elected as the constituencies new MP. Cllr Dakers, Lib Dem prospective MP for the Brentford and Isleworth constituency, says: "If I am elected one of the questions sent in by local people will be selected for my first question to the Prime Minister in Prime Ministers Questions (PMQs). It could be anything from the local to the global. "Suggestions should be texted to 07788 116159 or emailed to hi@andrewdakers.com by midnight on Friday 30 April. "The most common five questions will then feature in a poll on www.andrewdakers.com through to election day - 6 May- when the most popular question will be announced. "I am making no assumptions about the result of the election: the voters will decide. What I am saying is that if I am elected I would introduce a new type of relationship between the constituency's MP and local people. Actively encouraging voters to propose questions that I ask in parliamentary questions would be a first step. My priority is to be accessible to voters and be their voice in parliament." "If I am elected this is the first of many changes I would introduce to ensure that my parliamentary activities would reflect the needs and interests of voters in Chiswick, Brentford, Hounslow, Isleworth, Gunnersbury and Osterley." - Lib Dems Cable & Dakers team up with Independents in renewed call for Mogden investment
Cllr Andrew Dakers, Vince Cable MP, other local councillors and campaigners outside Mogden Sewage Works As the residents' court case against Thames Water continues, Lib Dem campaigners - including Vince Cable MP and Prospective MP Councillor Andrew Dakers - have teamed up with Independent councillors and campaigners for a photo-call outside Mogden Sewage works in Isleworth. Campaigners renewed their calls for much faster action by Thames and OFWAT to cover the remaining six storm water tanks. Vince Cable, Lib Dem Prospective MP for Twickenham and Shadow Chancellor said: "Several years ago, following the campaign in which I and others were involved, Thames Water covered two of the storm tanks and the main areas of the works which generate odour with a £50 million investment programme. "This has undoubtedly improved matters but there are still problems with the uncovered tanks when there are unpredictable weather patterns. These problems could get worse when the plant expands in the next few years. This is why today we are renewing our call for a much a tighter timetable for covering the remaining storm tanks." Cllr Andrew Dakers, Lib Dem Prospective MP for Brentford & Isleworth Constituency, said: "Vince Cable and I first called last Autumn for the six remaining storm tanks to be covered. It is just incredible that this has not already been addressed after years and years of protests. We have long supported residents' call for responsible investment in the sewage works and will continue to do so. If elected as MP, my priority for Isleworth will be to knock heads together at Thames Water and OFWAT so that an end is found to this sorry saga." Cllr Paul Fisher, Independent Community Group, who recently gave evidence at the High Court along with Cllr Shirley Fisher, added: "It was excellent that both Vince Cable MP and prospective MP Councillor Andrew Dakers both came along to Mogden today. They recognise what a blight on our local community this plant is and the complete failure by Thames Water to stop the odour which permeates the local area. "How shameful that our current incumbent Labour MP Ann Keen welcomed the decision to increase the plant's capacity by over 50% when so many of her constituents suffer so greatly already." - Andrew Dakers offers condolences after tragic death of Polish leaders
Andrew Dakers the Lib Dem Prospective MP for Brentford and Isleworth has offered his condolences to Polish residents following the tragic loss of the Polish President, Lech Kaczynski, and other Polish leaders in an plane crash in Russia. Andrew Dakers said: "My heart goes out to local Polish residents in London Borough of Hounslow today. As the Polish prime minister has said, this is the greatest peacetime tragedy to befall their country. "Losing their country's president, Lech Kaczynski, the deputy foreign minister, the governor of the central bank, senators, MPs and the commander of the navy is a tragedy beyond belief. The nation is in our hopes and prayers as it mourns their loss and then starts the slow process of recovery and planning new elections in these horrendous circumstances. "I will be visiting the Polish Federation of Great Britain in Hammersmith in the coming days to add my name to the book of remembrance."
