Today Berwick Liberal Democrats are celebrating the announcement on the dualling of the A1.

Alan Beith MP and Lib Dem candidate Julie Pörksen have been campaigning along with local residents for years on the issue.

Having held an urgent meeting with ministers last week to secure the essential funding, Alan and Julie are delighted that their hard work has finally paid off.

The Department for Transport today confirmed that £290m will be set aside to complete the dualling of the A1.

Liberal Democrats know the value of helping people get from A to B. For decades grassroots Lib Dem campaigners have fought to improve the roads and railways in their local areas and now that we are in Government we are able to do that on an enormous scale.

That's why we have delivered the biggest investment in the railways since the Victorian era, overseen a record investment in renewable energy and pushed so hard to improve Britain's roads too.

And we want to go further. That's why we are the only party committed to borrowing to invest in major capital projects once we have balanced the books by 2018.
