Mayor is still in the slow lane in delivering affordable housing – Stephen Knight

Stephen Knight AM, Liberal Democrat London Assembly housing spokesperson, commenting on today's announcement of four further Housing Zones across London said:

"These proposals have some merit but the big picture is that the Mayor has ultimately failed to deliver anywhere near enough affordable homes.

"Back in April 2012 the Mayor became the largest public sector landowner in London, inheriting over 600 hectares of land from the former quangos such as the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and London Development Agency (LDA).

"Yet despite these immense powers fewer than 2,000 homes have been built on land owned by the Mayor of London since 2012.

"The Mayor has been far too reluctant to release surplus land and ineffective at building partnerships with those who want to develop new homes.

"When it comes to delivering affordable homes sadly the Mayor is still in the slow lane."
