Joe Bourke - Biography

Joe BourkeJoe Bourke is the Liberal Democrat choice for Brentford and Isleworth in the snap General election, having stood here in 2015. He previously stood as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Dagenham and Rainham constituency in the 2010 General election. Joe looks forward to campaigning on his own patch, meeting new friends and neighbours around the borough, hearing their concerns and hopes for the future - and promoting Liberal Democrat policies.

Joe is a Chartered Certified Accountant running his own practice, serving small and medium size enterprises in West London, and lectures on Accountancy and Finance at the local University of West London. Joe is the honorary auditor for the Brentford Chamber of Commerce and is proud that the business secretary Vince Cable, and other Liberal Democrats in Government have promoted policies to help individuals start their own business and get access to growth finance.

Joe grew up in Southall and after attending grammar school in Harrow, took professional accountancy examinations. After qualifying, he worked abroad for several years in Europe, the United States and Japan before returning to London in the mid-nineties.

Joe has been actively engaged in his local community, serving as treasurer for a teachers' union, school governor in Brentford, chairing a trade association committee, serving as a director of Brentford Football Club and its supporters' trust as well as serving on the board of Supporters Direct, the national body for supporters' trusts. Joe joined the Liberal Democrats after working with local party members to preserve the local football at the heart of the community in Brentford and its surrounding environs.

During this election, Joe will be fighting for Brentford and Isleworth residents and highlighting:

• 57% of Brentford and Isleworth residents voted to Remain in the EU and many more oppose the reckless decision of this hard-right Conservative government to pursue a 'hard Brexit'. Only the Lib Dems here in Hounslow are truly fighting her plans and fought to Remain.
• Liberal Democrat policies which have benefitted Brentford and Isleworth: more money for local schools, more apprenticeships, income tax cuts, and more support for carers.
• The widespread concern with Labour's local area and housing plans, developed without seemingly considering the implications of an ever greater population density within a transport system already groaning under the strain.
• The need for joined-up thinking to deliver good quality affordable housing in the area - whilst considering the impact on local services and transport links.

On the issue of Heathrow, Joe has served as Chair of the Association of British Travel Agents' aviation committee and was ABTA's liaison for the Terminal 5 development. Whilst it is Liberal Democrat policy to oppose any expansion at Heathrow, Joe is clear that existing services at Heathrow must be protected. Any proposal to close Heathrow would be a disaster for the local economy and jobs.

During the campaign, Joe is looking forward to promoting liberal values which are needed to build a freer and fairer society where there are opportunities for everyone against the reactionary policies of the other parties.
